Risk Governance and Sustainability<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2013, risk governance has been a major research focus at the University of Siegen, a topic concerning the sustainable, strategic steering of risks that adds value to the corporate functions of risk management, internal auditing, compliance, and corporate governance. The past six annual conferences on risk governance have discussed and enhanced risk governance at the corporate level.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 7th Annual Conference on Risk Governance at the University of Siegen is scheduled for October 24-25, 2019. Researchers and practitioners are again cordially invited to submit proposals for presentation at the conference.<\/span><\/p>\n

The general theme of this year’s conference is „Risk Governance and Sustainability“. While risk governance has become a relevant topic in the socio-political context (e.g., Renn, 2008; van Asselt and Renn, 2011) and has been established as an economic concept in business (Stein and Wiedemann, 2016), the transfer of its main ideas to corporate practice has only recently begun picking up speed. Risk governance is intended to fill the gap in organizations between corporate governance and risk management with regard to comprehensive risk mitigation of the business model adaptation – and precisely this serves to ensure sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Risk governance strives for a proactive risk control throughout the whole company and is committed to the norms of “good corporate governance”. In that way, clear ethical signals with regard to riskrelated sustainability are sent to all kinds of stakeholders. A special feature of risk governance is its openness and its ability to take up current social issues. The aim of risk governance is to recognize also non-financial risks at an early stage and evaluate their impact on the organization. This year’s conference theme “sustainability” is inspired by relevant political and regulatory impulses like the action plan of the European Commission published in March 2018. The action plan aims at the adoption of a common language for sustainable finance in the form of a single EU classification system, greater transparency of corporate balance sheets, and a strengthening of disclosure rules. The CSR Directive Implementation Act, which came into force in 2017, aims in the same direction by laying down new reporting obligations particularly for listed companies with more than 500 employees.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 7th Annual Conference on Risk Governance aims at shedding more light on the connection between risk governance and the current developments in the context of sustainability-related strategy considerations as well as accounting and disclosure regulations. Considerably more research is needed to identify and analyse the similarities and connecting lines, but also any differences between existing corporate monitoring systems and risk governance, and thus to come up with accurate recommendations for corporate practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Strategic Management<\/span><\/p>\n

Manuscripts or extended abstracts (1-2 pages) not disclosing the identities of their authors can be submitted for presentation at the conference to arnd.wiedemann@uni-siegen.de.<\/span><\/p>\n

More information on the conference and risk governance research at the University of Siegen is available at www.riskgovernance.de. The first day of the conference will presumably focus on academically-oriented topics, while the second day of the conference will focus on topics with strong links to practice. Following special issues in the Journal of Business Economics (Baule and Fandel, 2016), Zeitschrift für KMU und Entrepreneurship (ZfKE) (Hiebl et al., 2018a), Journal of Risk Finance (Hiebl et al., 2018b) and Management Research Review (in progress), this year’s conference will be associated with a special issue of the Journal of Business Economics, which will also focus on “Risk Governance and Sustainability“. (Not only) speakers of the conference are cordially invited to submit their manuscripts for publication in this special issue. A separate call for papers for this special issue will be published soon and can also be found on the risk governance website of the University of Siegen at www.riskgovernance.de.<\/span><\/p>\n
