{"id":6764,"date":"2026-03-19T10:27:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T09:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eaa-online.org\/arc\/?p=6764"},"modified":"2026-03-19T11:16:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T10:16:48","slug":"academic-empathy-dialogue-on-tax-and-taxation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eaa-online.org\/arc\/blog\/2026\/03\/19\/academic-empathy-dialogue-on-tax-and-taxation\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Empathy Dialogue on Tax and Taxation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The EAA Virtual Activities Committee is delighted to announce that the next Academic Empathy Dialogue on Tax and Taxation will be held on April 20, 2026 at 3:00pm Brussels time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Academic Empathy Dialogue brings together&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-paderborn.de\/en\/person\/530\">Caren Sureth-Sloane<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lottabjorklundlarsen.se\/en\/\">Lotta Bj\u00f6rklund Larsen<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;to explore how different disciplinary perspectives shape our understanding of taxation. The Dialogue will be moderated by&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/people.miami.edu\/profile\/falsetta@miami.edu\">Diana Falsetta<\/a><\/strong>. While both scholars study the role of taxes in shaping individual and societal behavior, their approaches differ markedly. Caren Sureth-Sloane\u2019s work, grounded in economics and accounting, examines how taxation influences corporate decisions such as investment, risk-taking, and international business activity, as well as firms\u2019 tax compliance and its enforcement. Lotta Bj\u00f6rklund Larsen draws on qualitative social research&nbsp;and ethnographic methods to study how various stakeholders \u2013 individual and corporate taxpayers as well as tax administrators \u2013 on the tax arena interpret and practice taxation. She has explored issues such as trust, legitimacy, fairness surrounding compliance and takes a special interest in how various epistemologies foster tax compliance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By bringing together economic and anthropological perspectives, this dialogue seeks to foster mutual understanding across research traditions and encourage new ways of thinking about taxation as both an economic and a social phenomenon.
