The first document attesting its existence dates back to September 20, 1459, but archaeological research revealed the vestiges of a fortress dating from the second half of the 14th century. In 1659 it became the capital of Wallachia. At the end of the 19th century, the reign of King Carol I, born Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, was the period of construction of large representative buildings for the city, including the Romanian Athenaeum and the Athénée Palace Hotel. After the First World War, Bucharest became one of the most beautiful European capitals and was nicknamed the “Little Paris of the East”, due to the brilliance of its cultural and social life, the bohemian atmosphere and its architecture.

Today, the city is a mixture of tradition and modernism and home to about 2 million people.
