The first document attesting its existence dates back to September 20, 1459, but archaeological research revealed the vestiges of a fortress dating from the second half of the 14th century. In 1659 it became the capital of Wallachia. At the end of the 19th century, the reign of King Carol I, born Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, was the period of construction of large representative buildings for the city, including the Romanian Athenaeum and the Ath\u00e9n\u00e9e Palace Hotel. After the First World War, Bucharest became one of the most beautiful European capitals and was nicknamed the \u201cLittle Paris of the East\u201d, due to the brilliance of its cultural and social life, the bohemian atmosphere and its architecture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, the city is a mixture of tradition and modernism and home to about 2 million people. It is a safe city, recognized for its sightseeing options, its parks, malls, restaurants, night clubs and affordable prices. The Romanian capital is a city of contrasts, where historic buildings (such as <span style=\"color: #0099cc;\"><a style=\"color: #0099cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ihg.com\/intercontinental\/hotels\/us\/en\/bucharest\/buhap\/hoteldetail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">InterContinental Ath\u00e9n\u00e9e Palace Hotel<\/a><\/span>) stand side by side with glass and metal structures (such as the <span style=\"color: #0099cc;\"><a style=\"color: #0099cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.radissonhotels.com\/en-us\/hotels\/radisson-blu-bucharest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Radisson Blu Hotel<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When in Bucharest, one can visit, among others, the <a href=\"http:\/\/cic.cdep.ro\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palace of Parliament<\/a> (the second largest building in the world, the largest in Europe), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fge.org.ro\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0099cc;\">Romanian Athenaeum<\/span><\/a>, the outdoor <span style=\"color: #0099cc;\"><a style=\"color: #0099cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/muzeul-satului.ro\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Village Museum<\/a><\/span>, the Old Town and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oase-professional.com\/en\/fountain-technology\/references\/entertainment-fountain-bucharest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bucharest Fountains<\/a> (the longest choreographed fountain system in the world) or the King Michael I (formerly \u201cHer\u0103str\u0103u\u201d) Park (the largest park located in a European city).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bucharest is served by the country\u2019s largest international airport (Henri Coand\u0103 International Airport, code OTP). Connections are available to all major European cities, multiple times a day in some cases.
