Expression of Interest – EAA Hackathon 2025, Rome

The EAA Hackathon brings together accounting academics from across the world, normally the afternoon preceding the EAA Annual Congress proceedings, to collaborate in small teams on creatively ‘hacking’ elements of the accounting curriculum. It takes place physically within the EAA Annual Congress location over a determined (4 to 5 hour) period. A reflection on Hackathon 2024 can be found here.

The Education Committee is accepting proposals for collaborations for Hackathon 2025 in Rome. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Technology, AI, Big Data
  • Sustainability and Climate Change
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (including accessibility of university education)

We encourage you to submit your proposals at your earliest convenience by emailing to Anastasia Kopita (anastasia.kopita@cut.ac.cy) and Baha Diyarov (baha.diyarov@eiasm.be) before December 1st, 2024. Hackathon proposals will be approved by the EAA Management Committee.

Proposals should include a proposed title (topic), a 500-1000-word description (discussing and motivating the theme), details of any resources needed, cost estimates (for materials etch) and (preferably) potential facilitators.

On behalf of the Education Committee, we are looking forward to your applications.

The following principles should guide the design of this event:

  • reflecting some of the pressing interdisciplinary problems society and/or the profession face,
  • appealing and challenging for all accounting educators,
  • sharing a culture of product creativity, innovation and out-of-the-box thinking,
  • positively influencing student learning, student engagement, or the overall student experience, while providing a more inclusive approach to learning.

The event is organized and run by the EC according to the following principles:

  1. The organizing team of each annual Hackathon event will normally consist of a maximum of 4 people (including the EC chair and at least 1 EC member who will act as session co-organizers).
  2. The EC does not exclude partnering with other parties for the event, provided that the interest is educational and not commercial.
  3. Previous Hackathon organizers and members of the EC are also eligible to apply.
  4. The number of participants will normally not exceed 60. Given that places to this event are limited, they will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and notification of acceptance will be announced together with papers’ acceptance or rejection decision.
  5. Participants will be asked to work in teams and prepare an output based on the guidance of the organizers and facilitators. Outputs will be presented by each team, with the organizing team and other facilitators will providing feedback to each team.
  6. After the event, all participants will receive an electronic Certificate of Attendance.
  7. After the event, the organizing team will be required to prepare a report with the key takeaways from the event, including summaries of the participant outputs and feedback from participants. The EC will provide feedback and recommendations for improvement as necessary and communicate these to the MC. Appropriate summaries and material will be also available to all EAA members.
  8. Considering the event design investment, the EC may propose the option for a two-year event, subject to satisfactory evaluation/review of the prior event.
