The Department of Accounting and Commercial Law at Hanken School of Economics invites applications for two Tenure Track Positions as Assistant or Associate Professor in Accounting

Accounting Research at Hanken

Hanken Accounting major is part of Hanken's Area of Strength in the group of Financial Management, Accounting, and Governance. Consequently, we have a high preference for applicants demonstrating quantitative research activities within the following areas: Financial Accounting, Reporting or Analysis; Corporate Governance; Auditing; or Sustainable Investing and ESG.

We have a strong research climate reflected in the volume and range of research activities. The faculty has several publications in acknowledged accounting journals, such as Review of Accounting Studies, Accounting & Business Research, Accounting Forum, Accounting Horizons, Accounting, Organizations and Society, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Corporate Governance, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, European Accounting Review, International Journal of Accounting, Journal of International Accounting, Auditing and Taxation, Journal of Management Accounting Research and Management Accounting Research. Our goal is to further increase the quantity and proportion of publications in highly ranked Accounting journals.

We have strong collaborative links with other universities and business schools around the world as well as close cooperation with Big 4 and a large number of corporations.

 

Tenure track at Hanken School of Economics

The tenure track is open to qualified individuals who have excellent potential for a scientific career. Individuals placed on the Hanken tenure track have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas of their scope of duty. Requirements

Those in the academic tenure track system at Hanken are expected to carry out and supervise scientific research, to provide high quality academic teaching, to closely follow the advances of their field, promote and actively apply external research financing, to participate in service to the Hanken School of Economics community, to the academic community and to the society at large.

The applicants should hold a doctoral degree in accounting or in a related field and are expected to have demonstrated a high level of academic competence, have experience of leading academic research, good teaching skills and extensive teaching experience.

The applicants will be reviewed based on their research, teaching and activity in the scientific community. Special consideration is given to candidates that have demonstrated their ability (or potential) to produce high quality research. Those candidates applying for Associate Professor level are required to fulfil the publication requirements for tenure, as judged by the tenure track committee of the school. In the absence of formal proof of quality in research and teaching (e.g. published papers, teaching ratings), applicants are encouraged to submit proof of significant potential for high-quality teaching and research. Applicants are required to have fluent command of English. Swedish language skills are not mandatory but considered a merit, and the recruited candidate will be expected to later learn the basics of the Swedish language.

The following additional qualifications are also considered as merits: experience of responsibility for a degree programme, a subject, department, faculty or university, successfully raising external research funds, experience in leading the development of teaching, and pedagogical education.

The following criteria, of which research merits are most important, will be used to evaluate the applicants:

  1. Research merits within Accounting, that is the applicant’s contributions to the development of knowledge in his/her field.
  2. Teaching merits, including teaching experience, pedagogical training, the quality of the teaching portfolio, and (if applicable) the trial lecture made by the applicant.
  3. Participation in international research community and external research financing
  4. Community service

 

During the school year, the successful candidate is expected to spend a minimum average of three days per week at the Department in order to actively contribute to the research and teaching environment in the campus. Teaching tasks are moderate, and they are allocated based on the curriculum needs of the Department and by considering expertise of the successful candidate.

 

Responsibilities

The position is full time with annual working time 1624 hours. Teaching tasks are allocated based on the curriculum needs of the Department and by considering relevant own expertise. The main responsibilities of the positions are:

• Conduct research within the subject that meets high international levels, publishing your research in scholarly outlets and communicating the results of your work to the business community and society at large.

• Contribute to the research efforts and the development of new research capabilities of the department.

  • Contribute to promote and actively apply external research financing

• Contributing successfully to the competence development of students by providing research-based teaching and supervision.

• Contributing to the development of the teaching capabilities of the department.

• Contributing to the administration of the department and the business school (Associate Professor).

 

Salary

The salary is based on the university salary system in Finland (including employee healthcare as well as pension and holiday contributions); the exact salary level depends on the recruited individual’s qualifications and performance. The entry level salary is in the range of 45000-65000 euro /year depending on the position. For candidates with more extensive qualifications and substantial research activity the salary level can be higher. The trial period will be 6 months.
