The Journal of Business Finance and Accounting (JBFA) Capital Markets Conference (CMC) is one of the longest established conferences in Europe. The 27th Conference will be held 20-22 May 2020 at the new SDA Bocconi campus, Bocconi University, in Milan, Italy.

The origins of the CMC can be traced back to 1991, when Martin Walker and I organized a conference hosted by University of Manchester as part of an ESRC-funded research project. Papers from that conference were subsequently published, after academic review, in a Special Issue of JBFA in 1992.

We still follow this model today. Most papers presented at the Capital Markets Conference (CMC) address research questions of interest to researchers working at the interfaces between accounting, finance and corporate governance, reflecting the aims and cope of JBFA.

Papers submitted for the Conference are sent for review and then a set of papers likely to generate lively Conference discussion is selected for presentation at the Conference – authors of some other papers submitted for the Conference are invited to revise and resubmit their papers for a regular issue of JBFA if their papers have publication potential.

Papers are then normally published in a Conference Special Issue the following year, after authors have been given opportunities to revise their paper in light of comments received from conference participants, discussants, reviewers and editors.

In the JBFA Conference we aim to combine a convivial social program with serious, yet friendly, academic discussion. We have held the Conference in some great locations over the years. For many years we found our way to Windermere in the English Lake District, where the highlight became the JBFA Boat Race, which some people took very seriously, but for most of us was really just an excuse to work up a thirst for the pub later on. More recently, we have had really wonderful conferences at UNC Chapel Hill on four occasions (thanks to Wayne Landsman, one of our consulting editors), Venice, Cass Business School in London, Goethe University in Frankfurt, Polytechnic University Hong Kong, University of Queensland, University College Dublin and, most recently ESMT Berlin

In 2020 the Conference will return for a second time to Bocconi University in Milano, five years after our first conference here. We are looking forward to sharing the hospitality of Milano with our speakers and invited conference participants, including friends of JBFA old and new.

We are a small Conference running on a pretty tight budget, despite the generosity of our sponsors Wiley Publishers, the KPMG Foundation, and SDA Bocconi. Therefore you will appreciate that we have to make Conference attendance by invitation only. If you are not on the Editorial Board and would like to attend the conference, the best way to generate an invitation is to submit a paper and have it accepted.
