After the success of the Diversity Roundtable Conversation at the EAA Virtual Congress, the EAA Virtual Activities Committee is delighted to host another event on “Gender in the Accounting Profession”, which will take place on Zoom, on September 22, 2021 at 4.00pm CEST. Despite their important role in the profession, women accountants still face significant challenges and little has been done to improve gender equity. The low presence of women in senior leadership roles (‘glass ceiling’) and the difficulties accounting firms face to retain women are key indicators that accounting is still a gendered profession in many contexts.
After many years of research on practicing supporting women accountants and substantial human and financial investments, questions remain around how differences between men and women accountants still persist. We also observe little acknowledgement of gender diverse people working in accounting.
Join Kathryn Haynes and Emily Martin, experts from academia and practice, as they delve into this topic, drawing on their own fascinating experience and research into gender and accounting. Irma Malafronte will facilitate this fascinating conversation and there will be an opportunity for Q&A.

EAA Virtual Activities Committee
Kathryn Haynes is Professor of Accounting at Northumbria University. She is also a Chartered Accountant and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and has held numerous leadership roles in Universities. She had several grants from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) addressing gender, responsible management and the sustainable development goals and was co-facilitator of the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) Gender Equality Working Group for 8 years. Her research on gender and accountancy has greatly influenced the understanding of gender issues in accounting and in the accounting profession.
Emily Martin is Vice President for Education & Workplace Justice at the National Women’s Law Center. She oversees NWLC’s advocacy, policy, and education efforts to ensure fair treatment and equal opportunity for women and girls at work and at school and to forward policy frameworks that allow them to achieve and succeed, with a particular focus on the obstacles that confront women and girls of color and women in low-wage jobs.
Irma Malafronte is Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at Roehampton Business School, London, UK. Irma’s research interests include corporate reporting, integrated reporting, risk disclosure, sustainability and accounting for social impact. She is a member of the Diversity Group of the Virtual Activities Committee of the EAA.
