As we continue to see record temperatures, a seemingly accelerating rate of natural disasters and increasing concerns for nature all impacting organisational performance in some way, the EAA Education Committee asks: How can we meaningfully integrate sustainability into accounting curricula? What knowledge, skills and critical perspectives should future accountants develop? And how can educators move beyond teaching sustainability reporting requirements to encourage a broader understanding of accounting’s role in addressing environmental and social challenges?
This seminar brings together four scholars with expertise in sustainability accounting, reporting and education, Charles Cho, Ericka Costa, Blerita Korca and Valentina Beretta, to share insights, teaching experiences and reflections on the opportunities and challenges of integrating sustainability into accounting education.
Drawing on their research and educational practices, the speakers will explore different approaches to curriculum design, innovative teaching methods, student engagement and the challenges of translating sustainability concepts into meaningful learning experiences. The discussion will also consider the tensions between responding to evolving professional and regulatory expectations and fostering the critical thinking, ethical awareness and broader sense of accountability needed to address contemporary sustainability challenges.
Rather than offering a single model or set of solutions, the seminar aims to stimulate an open dialogue about what works, what remains difficult and what questions accounting educators should be asking as they rethink their curricula.
