Saaremaa Island

The largest island with an intact and well-restored medieval castle in its only city, Kuressaare. Stone fences, thatched roofs, working windmills and homemade beer are signs you have landed on Saaremaa.

The territory of Saaremaa has been inhabited for about eight thousand years. The people of Saaremaa have seen many battles and been ruled over by Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Russia.

Saaremaa has retained its uniqueness due to its location and isolation. In the villages there are still stone fences and houses with thatched roofs. Dolomite, windmills and the famous local home-brewed beer are considered the symbols of Saaremaa.

The capital (and only city) in Saaremaa is Kuressaare which started as a market trading place. In Kuressaare town park stands The Episcopal Castle which is unique in being the only intact medieval fortress in the Baltic countries.

In 1840 the first spa opened in Kuressaare and since then Saaremaa has been well-known as a resort area.
Because of its mild maritime climate and lime-rich soil, Saaremaa has very rich flora and fauna.

Narva City

Narva is the only location in Estonia that offers an unobstructed view of Estonia’s neighbor Russia. If it was not for the River Narva, the former occupying power would be even closer.

On the bank of the deep and rapid River Narva, at the border crossing with Russia, stands the powerful Hermann Fortress, the best preserved castle in Estonia. Nowadays it hosts the city museum where you can learn about the everyday life of ancient times and even make your own souvenirs using 17th century tools and techniques.

Narva was once called the “Baroque pearl of the Baltic Sea” but was almost completely destroyed in 1944 by Soviet aircraft raids explosions and fires set by retreating German troops.

Due to the heavy damage of the Second World War Narva had to be almost completely rebuilt. This is why today the city is dominated by Soviet architecture. Narva’s “modern” Town Hall, for example, is a prime example of typical Soviet architecture.
