The Future of Doctoral Education: A cross-disciplinary panel on declining doctoral applications in accounting and adjacent business disciplines
There has been a substantial public conversation over the past several months about declining applications to doctoral programs in accounting and in business disciplines more broadly. Much of it has taken place on LinkedIn, and much of it has been diagnostic: applications are down, some programs have paused admissions, AI is unsettling assumptions about the research model, and the funding environment has deteriorated. This session will discuss what is actually happening, using data rather than impressions; why it’s happening; and what we, the accounting academic community, can do about it.
Learning Objective(s):
1. Describe recent trends in doctoral applications and admissions in accounting and related business disciplines.
2. Identify key factors contributing to changes in doctoral program demand.
3. Discuss potential strategies that accounting faculty, doctoral programs, and the broader academic community can pursue to strengthen the doctoral pipeline and attract future applicants.
