The Journal of Accounting, Auditing, and Finance (JAAF) is pleased to announce the 2027 JAAF Annual Conference, hosted by the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Sofia, Bulgaria, on July 9–12, 2027. Marking the tenth edition of the conference, the event continues a decade of international scholarly exchange in accounting, auditing, finance, and related fields. It brings together academics, doctoral researchers, practitioners, and journal editors to present original research, receive constructive feedback, engage in academic debate, build international networks, and experience the cultural and historical heritage of Sofia and Bulgaria.
The JAAF Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium will begin on July 8 and conclude before the opening of the main conference on July 9, 2027. It will enable PhD students and new faculty (within 3 years of graduation) to present research in progress, receive developmental feedback from internationally recognized scholars and fellow doctoral researchers, and participate in small-group and professional-development sessions on academic publishing, peer review, research communication, methodology challenges, and early academic careers.
Both the JAAF Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium and the main conference will be held in person.
Annual Conference Plenary Session Submissions
Papers accepted for the Plenary Sessions will be considered for publication in JAAF under the journal’s established editorial and peer-review policies. Professors C. S. Agnes Cheng and Linda Myers will serve as Editors for the 2027 Plenary Session submissions, with final publication decisions made in consultation with the JAAF Editor-in-Chief, Professor Xiao-Jun Zhang.
Conference-related expenses of up to $1,500 USD will be reimbursed for one author of each accepted Plenary Session paper. Presenters must register for the conference; the conference registration fee is $480 USD during the early-bird period and $530 USD thereafter.
Plenary submissions must be made through the JAAF online submission system: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jaaf. After logging in, please select the “Conference Submission” track. The regular JAAF submission fee of $200 USD applies. The cover letter must identify the manuscript as a submission for the 2027 Annual Conference Plenary Sessions. In addition, authors must complete the form [here] to provide the Manuscript ID (which will be contained in the journal’s confirmation email) and indicate whether the submission should be considered for a Concurrent Session if it is not accepted for the Plenary Sessions.
Annual Conference Concurrent Session Submissions
Papers submitted directly to the Concurrent Sessions, as well as Plenary submissions not selected for the plenary program, will be reviewed by the Conference Scientific Committee, co-chaired by Stanley Gyoshev, Eleonora Stancheva-Todorova, and Cheng (Colin) Zeng. Best Paper Awards will recognize both regular conference papers and PhD student papers; authors seeking consideration for the PhD Student Paper Award must indicate this at submission. The PhD Student Paper Award applies only to papers accepted for presentation at the main conference and does not apply to papers presented in the Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium.
Manuscripts intended exclusively for the Concurrent Sessions should be submitted by completing the submission form [here], together with evidence of payment of the $50 USD submission fee [Click here to pay]. Authors of accepted papers must register for the conference; the conference registration fee is $480 USD during the early-bird period and $530 USD thereafter.
Papers not selected for the Plenary Sessions, as well as papers submitted directly to the Concurrent Sessions, remain eligible for later submission to JAAF as regular new manuscripts.
Annual Conference Submission Rules
Only full papers representing complete scholarly research projects will be considered for the Plenary and Concurrent Sessions; research proposals and abstracts will not be accepted. Each submission must comprise two files: (1) a title page with the paper’s title, author names, affiliations, keywords, contact details, and acknowledgments, where applicable; and (2) an anonymized manuscript containing the abstract and full text without author-identifying information. Submissions and presentations must be in English, and manuscripts should be sufficiently developed to be suitable for circulation as public working papers, including through repositories such as SSRN.
To accommodate all participants and ensure a diverse program, each registered attendee may only present one paper. If an author submits multiple papers, please ensure that a co-author(s) will register for the conference and will be available to present the additional paper(s).
Submissions for the JAAF Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium
Applicants should submit the following three items: (1) an extended abstract of up to three pages, outlining the research question, theoretical background, methodology, expected or preliminary findings, and intended contribution; (2) a short academic CV; and (3) for PhD students, a brief endorsement from the student’s doctoral supervisor confirming the applicant’s PhD status and the research project’s stage of development.
Priority will be given to PhD students over New Faculty, specifically to PhD applicants whose work has progressed beyond the initial proposal stage and who are actively developing a paper or dissertation. Applications will be assessed by the Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium Committee based on research quality, development potential, and relevance to the fields covered by JAAF. Acceptance will be subject to available capacity.
Applications for the Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium should be emailed to phdsymposium2027Sofia@feb.uni-sofia.bg by February 27, 2027. The Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium participation fee is $95 USD. Authors of the three highest-ranked doctoral research submissions selected for the Symposium will receive full waivers of the Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium participation fee. Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium participants who also register for the main conference will pay a reduced conference registration fee of $390 USD. Further application and participation details will be published on the conference website. Participation in the Doctoral/New Faculty Symposium does not preclude applicants from submitting the same paper (but in full paper format) for separate consideration in the Plenary or Concurrent Sessions of the main conference.
