The EAA Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee (DEIC) is delighted to continue with the series of critical conversations on the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Accounting within the context of Europe and beyond. This panel discussion on Ableism in Accounting Academy – Research and Practice will delve into the challenges and opportunities that people with disabilities face within the accounting academia and profession. Thought leaders from industry and academia will explore how corporate environments and educational institutions can work together to improve inclusivity, and equity for individuals with disabilities. This event will take place on Zoom, on December 4th, 2024, at 3:00pm – 4:30pm CET. Registration is free and open here.

This 90-minute event will include a panel discussion followed by an audience Q&A session. Our panelists will share their perspectives and experiences on the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the accounting workforce and academia, focusing on the role of legislation, corporate culture, and the impact of technology as an enabler.

We would discuss these issues including:

  • The global landscape of disability legislation and its impact on the workforce
  • Addressing ableism and the lack of disability inclusion within academia and the accounting profession
  • Supporting leadership development and career readiness for students with disabilities
  • The value of including employees with disabilities in the workforce
  • Addressing challenges that accounting students with disabilities face when seeking employment
  • Promoting equitable performance evaluations and career advancement

Our panel is comprised of:

  • Emilia Chukwuma, School Director, Dean of the Faculty, Business, Gallaudet University.
  • Leah Geer, California State University-Sacramento
  • Sridhar Chandrika, Partner at Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP
