In our turbulent world characterised by interlocking polycrises, many of the traditional accounting techniques and educational methods are increasingly becoming irrelevant. This provides an opportunity to reimagine accounting and repurpose accounting education not to be missed.  Imagine if we could harness the power and resources of our accounting students into an international collaborative generative education project, based on robust citizen science methodologies, harnessing best practice accounting and accountability to solve global wicked problems that threaten our very future.

In this workshop, Ian Thomson will:

• Provide a brief introduction to grand challenges, generative education and citizen science.
• Illustrate how these three concepts could be integrated into accounting education through the collaborative design of innovative accounting and accountability techniques.
• Discuss grand challenges suitable for this form of education.
• Reflect on advantages, opportunities and risks of this innovative strategy.

Ian Thomson is Emeritus Professor of Accounting and Sustainability at University of Dundee and independent researcher at Sustainability Research Services. Ian has been researching topics relating to sustainability, accounting and accountability since 1990. This research has included cleaner technology, stakeholder engagement, risk governance, sustainable development indicators, sustainable development goals, finance and regenerative biodiversity, climate change, effective pedagogy, use of accounting by activists, international development programmes, food systems, plastics and football. He was convenor of the Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research, is currently Editor of Social and Environmental Accountability Journal, is active in a number of large interdisciplinary research projects, and is engaged with institutions such as Stockholm Resilience Centre, IPCC report, Scottish Parliament, Business in the Community, CIMA, Sustainable Development Commission (Scotland), UN World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organisation and Environment Programme. In 2019 Ian Thomson was awarded BAFA Distinguished Academic Award of the year. He has an exceptional academic and educator, advocating for, designing and delivering impactful accounting education throughout his career.
